Petite Verdot

Historically, Petit Verdot has been used as a blending grape. When able to ripen fully the grape can add a rich purple color, firm tannins and an exotic floral and spicy perfume to the palate. However, despite its positive attributes the grapes struggled to reach maturity in the relatively cool Bordeaux region of France. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, producers in California and Australia began planting Petite Verdot in their respective regions. The warm and dry conditions of these regions allow the grapes to fully ripen. Petit Verdot has not only succeeded but thrived, and acreage in both regions is on the upswing. While many of the California wineries continue to use small amounts of the grape in blends, a few have even produced wines with Petit Verdot as the primary grape variety.

Castoro Cellars, esablihed in the early 1980s, is one of the oldest wineries in the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA).
