John Michael Meier, a Bavarian farmer, planted 600 acres of Catawba grapes on his homestead just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. But it was his son, John Conrad Meier, who discovered a method of bottling fresh grape juice and maintaining its delicate flavor. That success is now part of Meier's Wine Cellars, Ohio's oldest and largest winery.

The first vines at North Carolina's Biltmore Estate were established in 1971. Today the 94-acre estate vineyard is the most visited winery in the United States. Some wine makers do not take themselves very seriously. The Joseph Zakon winery, named after its founder, is firmly established on "western Long Island, NY." Translated, that's Brooklyn!
